Pros and Cons of Marrying a Ukrainian Woman

Although Ukrainian girls love strong, chivalrous men, they happily pick up the slack. A Ukrainian wife can be a stay-at-home mom, a remarkable hostess and a homemaker, but she can also join the workforce to contribute to the family income. Most Ukrainian girls don’t like to idle, so they are always looking for ways to make the world around them better and brighter. And as a husband, you’ll be the first to benefit from a Ukrainian wife’s drive.

It may sound surprising, considering the high divorce rate in Ukraine, but most Ukrainian women value their relationships and only decide to leave when they see no other options. For example, many Ukrainian marriages fall apart due to substance abuse and infidelity issues. If you’re committed to building a lifelong partnership with your Ukrainian wife, she will put all her efforts into supporting your marriage.

Ukrainian women are pretty Westernized, and their background and upbringing are likely similar to yours. Aside from a few weird traditions and superstitions (like not opening an umbrella indoors to avoid bad luck), your Ukrainian wife should be able to adjust to her new life easily enough. She will have no trouble putting together meals using American ingredients, and you’ll watch the same shows on Netflix. You might have to teach her American football and baseball rules since neither is popular in Ukraine, but it can be a fun bonding experience. 

Ukrainians strive to join the European community, but local values are much more conservative. For example, tolerance levels towards people of other sexual preferences, religions, and ethnicities are relatively low. At the same time, minor rule-breaking is considered normal, as Ukrainians historically distrust their government officials and local authorities. These minor differences could make your wife’s first few months in the States uncomfortable until she adjusts to her new normal.

The language barrier is a big thing, considering how different Ukrainian is from English. Moreover, many euphemisms, jokes, and puns don’t translate well. Unless your wife has advanced English proficiency, conversations can get frustrating, and misunderstandings will be common. Luckily, the more time your wife spends in the States, the fewer issues you’ll have. At the same time, many Ukrainians are brought up to bottle up their concerns and troubles, which ultimately leads to emotional explosions. It takes time to get used to.

Although many Ukrainian women would benefit from therapy to deal with their emotional issues, a few need professional help to overcome the war-related trauma. Unfortunately, it will be hard to gauge your bride’s mental state in a long-distance relationship. Still, you should be ready to provide emotional support and cover the therapy bills if your wife needs it to deal with PTSD and other mental health issues. 

• Every Ukrainian woman is a gold digger with a victim complex. Although many women had to leave the country to flee from the war, they don’t play the victim card often. And their desire for financial stability does not automatically make them gold diggers.
• Ukrainians are poor, uneducated, and will do anything to leave the country. Most Ukrainians have university degrees and work hard to make ends meet, but they only had to leave their homeland because of the Russian invasion.
• Ukrainian wives are religious, quiet, and obedient. Less than 50% of the Ukrainian population is truly religious, and local women are as strong-willed and opinionated as men. Most are excellent homemakers, but they won’t let anyone walk all over them.
